If you had to take a guess about who has one of the busiest positions in a mid-sized company, what would your answer be? The big boss, i.e. the CEO or President? Well, guess again. That position which is stressful and overburdened is that of the Human Resources Director. There are never enough hours in the day to get everything done and it is the lucky HR honcho who has a staff to help out. There were already enough policies to enforce, forms to create and distribute and records to be maintained, without the advent of the Affordable Health Care Act, or ObamaCare and its seemingly endless list of rules and regs. Of course, there were new procedures, policies and protocol to get up to speed on, and, just when those items were mastered and taken care of, the rules and regs got legs as even more new procedures were implemented beginning January 2016.
The law is a fascinating subject, and, even if you are not a legal scholar, there are always criminal trials making headlines in the news. There are flamboyant or famous Defendants, some whom we’ll never meet on the street, but we know of their actions, or perhaps I should say “alleged actions” and the media makes us well aware of all the sordid details and titillating tidbits to help us make up our minds whether or not that person is guilty long before the final verdict is rendered.
You know it starts out innocent enough – a viral video that goes around the internet at the speed of sound. It soon is the talk at the office coffee machine, and, for those who’ve missed it, no less than a dozen people hustle back to their respective work stations to forward it along posthaste so our co-workers can see it personally. As an employer it is your job to be aware of the latest social media trends in the workplace and to keep your employees at check so that they are able to better perform their work duties without feeling threatened, with this there are many common legal questions that you may want to ask your employment law attorney.
You know you’re getting older when you start to think about socking away some money for retirement instead of enjoying that second cup of latte every day. Sure, that foamy cup of wonder gets you through a long afternoon at work, but foregoing that second treat and putting the money toward a retirement account and watching that account grow, will also give you a warm feeling inside.
Sadly the statistics don’t lie. It is estimated that some 40 to 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce courts these days. What can we attribute this to? Was the picking of a permanent partner more carefully thought out back in our parents’ day? Perhaps couples just agreed to disagree and kept a stiff upper lip and carried on with the relationship for the sake of the children. By the time the children were grown and out on their own, the polite air of civility was the norm and the relationship was comfortable, so the marriage continued until one or the other passed away.
Today though, our society seems less content to just be satisfied with making do in the relationship “until death do us part” and perhaps this accounts for the fact that nearly half of all marriages are doomed for divorce. Of course, there are the exceptions like needing to extricate oneself from a threatening relationship where domestic violence is present or when one’s spouse has addiction issues which seem unlikely to be resolved, even through counseling, thus, there is a resignation that divorce will be the answer.
Yet, domestic violence and addiction issues cannot account for all the divorces that crowd the family law docket these days. Why has the sanctity of marriage and a relationship that was so treasured become so seemingly disposable?
